Thursday of the Sixth Week of the Great Fast Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts at which we commemorate our Venerable Father George, Bishop of Mitylene (829-42); Passing into Eternal Life (1919) of Blessed Josaphata Hordashevska, First Superior of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate

Liturgy of the Presanctifed Gifts

At Psalm 140

In Tone 8

  1. Lead my soul forth from prison* that I may give thanks to Your name.

Account us worthy of beholding the week of Your passion,
Lover of mankind,
for we have finished the forty days of the fast;
may we glorify Your mighty deeds,
Your ineffable dispensation for our sakes:
Lord, glory to You!

In Tone 4

  1. The just shall gather around me* when You have been good to me.

Two of the sacred apostles,
knowing You, O Christ, as one of the Trinity,
now are sent by You to bring the ass
in fulfillment of the prophecy.
Humbling yourself, You will sit on it, compassionate One;
You prepare a throne in the highest for those who love You!
And those who in their folly submitted to unreasoning passions, Word,
You made cry out to You:  Hosanna!

  1. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

Two of the sacred apostles,
knowing You, O Christ, as one of the Trinity,
now are sent by You to bring the ass
in fulfillment of the prophecy.
Humbling yourself, You will sit on it, compassionate One;
You prepare a throne in the highest for those who love You!
And those who in their folly submitted to unreasoning passions, Word,
You made cry out to You:  Hosanna!

  1. Let Yours ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

Zion, receive your King!
For behold, now He comes to You in meekness,
to raise up Lazarus and to destroy the bitter kingdom of death.
Summoned by God, let all monastics and faithful assemble
to welcome Christ with palms and cry:
Blessed is He Who comes to save mortals through the passion of the Cross,
and in His love, to grant freedom from passions to all.

In Tone 8

  1. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

Upborne on the seraphim in the highest, Christ,
as the God and Maker of all,
You go to mount an ass on earth, as our Brother in the flesh.
Bethany is glad, Savior, receiving You!
Jerusalem rejoices, expecting You!
Death is slain, foretasting Lazarus’s resurrection from the dead!
We, fulfilling the greeting with palms, in joy,
extol the majesty of your love, Lord!

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

In Tone 1

  1. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

All-wise Father George,
you venerated the holy and undefiled icon of Christ with honor!
You were strengthened by His might,
not fearing at all the threats of those who fought against God!
Entreat Him now that our souls may be granted peace and great mercy!

  1. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

All-wise Father George,
you venerated the holy and undefiled icon of Christ with honor!
You were strengthened by His might,
not fearing at all the threats of those who fought against God!
Entreat Him now that our souls may be granted peace and great mercy!

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Glorious Father George,
you endured the wrath of the senselessly enraged ungodly ones;
you saw them exalt themselves in impious arrogance,
and again beheld them when they were openly and utterly crushed
by the providence that moved against the foolish ones!

  1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

Father George, you were a co-worker of God,
a priest and husbandman!
By your words, you brought the souls of the saved to the Master,
bearing fruit a hundred-fold!
Pray that He may grant our souls peace and great mercy!

In Tone 4, Now…

O Mother of God,
because of you David the prophet became an ancestor of God;
he foretold and sang a joyous hymn of praise
and cried out to Him who worked wonders in you:
“The Queen stood at Your right hand.”
God revealed you as a life-giving mother, when He chose to be incarnate of you without a father.
He renewed in man His image which the passions had corrupted.
He found the lost sheep in the mountains,
carried it on His shoulders, offered it to the Father,
generously numbered it among the powers of heaven,
and saved the whole world, since He is Christ of great and rich mercy.
