    GREAT VESPERS

    Kathisma Reading

“Blessed is the man...” is sung.

    At Psalm 140

    In Tone 4

Lead my soul forth from prison* that I may give thanks to Your name.

We never cease to adore Your life-giving Cross, O Christ our God,* And we glorify Your resurrection on the third day.* For You, Almighty One, have thereby restored the corrupted nature of all* and reopened the way to heaven,* since You alone are gracious and You love mankind.

The just shall gather around me* when You have been good to me.

O Saviour, You have absolved the penalty of disobedience,* committed through the tree of Eden,* by willingly being nailed to the tree of the cross.* As Almighty God, You descended into Hades* and broke asunder the bonds of death.* We, therefore, venerate Your resurrection from the dead,* and joyfully cry out to You:* Almighty Lord, glory to You!

Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

O Lord, You have battered down the gates of Hades,* and by Your death You have dissolved the realm of death.* You have freed mankind from corruption,* bestowing life, incorruption, and Your great mercy upon the world.

Let Your ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

Come, all you people,* let us sing the praises of our Saviour’s resurrection on the third day.* For we have, thereby, been delivered from the invincible bonds of Hades,* and we have received incorruption, together with eternal life.* Therefore, we cry out to You* after Your crucifixion, burial, and resurrection:* Save us by Your resurrection, for You love mankind.

    In Tone 4

If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

When divine desire fell upon you, O venerable one,* you accounted passionate attachments to the world to be deleterious;* wherefore, forsaking your homeland, you arrived on the Holy Mountain,* and there, in the midst of the fathers, you shone forth in virtue like a beacon, O Anthony.* Entreat Christ, whom you served from your youth,* that He save and enlighten our souls.

I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

When you were set afire by the love of Christ, O venerable one,* the wisdom and glory of this world despised as things which pass away;* wherefore, you made for yourself a cave,* and therein struggled like an incorporeal being,* for which cause you were vouchsafed from on high the honours of the incorporeal ones.* Standing with them before the throne of Christ,* pray that He save and enlighten our souls.

From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

When you received divine love into your heart, O father,* you entered into a dark cave as though it were an all-splendid bridal-chamber,* and there you were enriched with the understanding of ineffable things,* to behold the things of the future as though they were present,* and to speak of them plainly unto all.* Entreat Christ, for whom you laboured from your youth,* O venerable one,* that He save and enlighten our souls.

    In Tone 5

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

O venerable father Anthony, having illumined your mind with the grace of the all-holy Spirit,* as one with foresight you prophetically predicted the wrath of God which would fall upon Orthodoxy.* Wherefore, you entrusted the defence against foes to Simon,* and before the construction of the church you foretold to him that he would be laid to rest therein.* Wherefore, we continually hymn you as a mediator of good things for all,* asking that through you we may receive great mercy from Christ.

Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

O venerable father Anthony,* fulfilling the commandments of Christ, the true Shepherd and Teacher,* and showing forth love even after your departure,* by your supplications and appearance you transformed the deadly illness of Erasmus,* who was living in sloth, pining for possessions;* and having given him time for repentance, you guided others to chastity.* Wherefore, entreat Christ, that our souls be saved.

Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

O venerable father Anthony,* with God’s help you steered the ship of your mind with chastity,* safely sailed across the passion-fraught deep of the sea of this life,* impelled by the sail of the all-holy Spirit,* and reached the calm haven of paradise,* where the habitation of the saints and the resting-place of the righteous are.* With them pray, we beseech thee, that we also may obtain entry there.

    In Tone 6, Glory…

Hard was your way of life and your labours for God,* as the fathers of the Holy Mountain learned.* Wherefore, in accordance with God's providence,* they sent you to your homeland, saying:* “Go, child, that through you God may become known to those ignorant of Him there.”* There, when you arrived, O venerable one,* you enlightened your native land and became a leader of monks,* bringing a multitude of them to Christ.* Wherefore, pray that we who celebrate your most splendid repose* may be preserved unvanquished by the enemy,* and that our souls may be saved.

    In Tone 4

    Now…

O Mother of God, because of You* David the Prophet became an ancestor of God;* he foretold and sang a joyous hymn of praise* and cried out to Him who worked wonders in you:* “The Queen stood at your right hand.”* God revealed you as a life-giving mother,* when He chose to be incarnate of you without a father.* He renewed in man His image* which the passions had corrupted.* He found the lost sheep in the mountains,* carried it on His shoulders,* offered it to the Father,* generously numbered it among the powers of heaven,* and saved the whole world, since He is Christ of great and rich mercy.

    Readings

    (1) Proverbs 10:6-8; 8:6-21; (2) Wisdom 3:1-9; (3) Wisdom 5:15-6:3

    Aposticha

    In Tone 4

In being lifted upon the cross, O Lord,* You abolished the curse which we had inherited from our fathers.* By going down into Hades,* You freed from eternal captivity those imprisoned there,* and granted incorruption to mankind.* We, therefore, praise Your life-giving and redeeming resurrection.

The Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty. Robed is the Lord, and girt about with strength.

By hanging on the cross, O Almighty One,* You shook the whole creation to its foundations.* When You Yourself were laid in the grave,* You raised to life those who had been lying in the graves,* and You granted life and incorruption to mankind.* We, therefore, praise and glorify Your resurrection on the third day.

For He has made the world firm, which shall not be moved.

O Christ, the lawless people showed their ingratitude to You, their Benefactor,* by delivering You to Pilate who condemned you to be crucified.* But You willingly suffered death and burial;* and, as God, You rose by Your own power on the third day,* granting us everlasting life and great mercy.

Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, for length of days.

The women, shedding bitter tears, came to see You in Your tomb;* and not finding Your body, they lamented, saying:* O Saviour and King of All, how were You stolen?* What place holds Your life-bearing body?* An angel answered them, saying:* Do not weep, but go and proclaim that the Lord is risen,* filling our hearts with joy;* for He alone is most compassionate.

    In Tone 6, Glory…

Wondrous is the influence and great the faith which you have acquired, O venerable Anthony,* emulating the Prophet Elijah;* for he drew down fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice,* while you drew down fire from heaven by your supplication,* to consume and cleanse the place where you desired to erect the all-glorious temple of the Lady and Theotokos.* Wherefore, blessing you as one who dwells with the venerable* and emulates the prophets,* we pray: Entreat Christ, that our souls be saved.

    Now…

Christ the Lord, my Creator and Deliverer,* who came forth from your womb, O all-pure one,* and clothed Himself in me,* has freed Adam from the curse.* Wherefore, like the angel do we unceasingly cry out to you, O most pure one,* who art truly the Mother of God and Virgin:* Rejoice! Rejoice, O Lady,* intercession, protection, and salvation for our souls!

    Troparia

    In Tone 4

When the disciples of the Lord learned from the angel* the glorious news of the resurrection* and cast off the ancestral condemnation,* they proudly told the apostles:* “Death has been plundered!* Christ our God is risen,* granting to the world great mercy.”

    In Tone 4, Glory…

Leaving behind worldly tumult,* O venerable Father Anthony,* in keeping with the gospel you turned your back on the world,* and leading a life equal to that of angels you attained to the calm haven of Mount Athos* from whence you came to the Mount of Kiev* with the Fathers’ blessing* and living there an arduous life you enlightened your fatherland,* pointing the way into the Kingdom on high to a multitude of monks and nuns* and thus lead your homeland to Christ.* Pay to Him that He save our souls.

    Now...

O Mother of God, the mystery hidden from all eternity* and unknown even to the angels,* was revealed through you to those on earth:* God took on our human nature* and united it to His divine nature in a perfect but unconfused union.* Then, He willingly accepted the cross for our sake* and thereby raised again the first created man,* and saved our souls from death.

Arise then, Lord, lift up your hand. O God, do not forget the poor!

You suffered crucifixion willingly, O Saviour,* and mortals placed You into a new tomb,* even though You established the ends of the world with a word.* Death, our enemy, was bound and defeated through your life-giving Resurrection.* All those held captive In Hades cried out: Christ is risen,* and He shall reign forever as the Source of life.

    Glory… Now…

Your betrothed and guardian, O Theotokos, was amazed and perplexed* when he beheld the mystery of your conception without seed.* But he recalled the rain falling on the fleece,* and the bush burning with fire but not consumed,* and the blossoming rod of Aaron;* thus he testified before the priests and cried out:* A Virgin gives birth and still remains a virgin.

    Sessional Hymns

    In Tone 4

O divinely wise Anthony,* your all-radiant and luminous festival has arrived,* summoning your multitude of monks to glorify and hymn your honoured repose,* asking of Christ that through your mediation* we may receive great mercy.

You conversed and served with the fathers of the Holy Mountain, O father,* and following in their footsteps, you lived on earth as though you were an incorporeal being;* wherefore, you have been shown to dwell together with the venerable.* Joining chorus with them in the highest,* pray that the souls of us who unceasingly glorify you be saved.

    In Tone 8, Glory…

You entered into subterranean caves, O venerable one,* and from that time, as a victor over the passions, you mounted the chariot of the virtues,* soaring to the heavens above like another Elijah,* and there you have been crowned with the all-radiant crown of righteousness, O blessed one.* But as when you were with us in this life, you grieved and took thought of goodly things for us,* so now also, O father Anthony, entreat Christ God,* that He great remission of sins to those who with love* honour your holy memory.

    Now…

As the most immaculate Bride of the Creator,* as the Mother of the Deliverer, who knew not wedlock,* as the vessel of the Comforter, O all-hymned one,* make haste to deliver me who am the vile abode of iniquity* and have become in mind the plaything of the demons from their machinations;* and make me the splendid habitation of the virtues.* O radiant and incorrupt one, dispel from me the cloud of the passions,* and vouchsafe to me communion on high and the never-waning light,* through your supplications.

    Gradual Hymns, Tone 4

    Antiphon I

Streams of grace* are made to flow by the Holy Spirit* and they water the whole creation* that it may live.

    Antiphon 3

Let my heart be lifted towards You, O Word,* and may none of the pleasures of the earth* entice me towards the ground.

    Glory… Now…

In the Holy Spirit is the wealth of the knowledge of God* and contemplation and wisdom* for in Him the Word reveals all the teachings* that come from the Father.

    of Sunday

    Canon, Tone 4

[The canon has been simplified for parish use]

    Ode 1

Irmos: Through the Red Sea, as on the dry land,* old Israel passed on with unmoistened foot;* crosswise, in the wilderness, Moses held up his arms* and they routed Amalek’s might.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

As good and all-powerful, O Lord, you were lifted up on the immaculate tree of your cross, healing by the tree our utter destruction, setting right our defection.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

In your body in the tomb, as God with your soul in Hell, with the Thief in Paradise, you were yet, O Christ, on the throne with the Father and the Spirit, all things filling, and infinite.

    Glory… Now…

You conceived the Son of God without seed, by the Father’s purpose, from the divine Spirit; you bore in flesh the one from the Father without mother: through us, out of you, without father.

    Ode 3

Irmos: Your Church, O Christ, makes merry in you, crying aloud:* You are my strength, O Lord, my refuge, my firm foundation.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

The tree of life, the true and intellectual vine, hangs upon the cross pouring forth to all the elixir of life.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

As a great one and fearful, demolishing utterly the insolence of Hell, as God incorruptible, now you have risen in the flesh.

    Glory… Now…

You only, O Mother of God, are the friend who procures the good things beyond nature for those upon earth and therefore we bring to you our “Hail.”

    Ode 4

Irmos: Seeing you the Sun of Righteousness* lifted high on the cross,* with good reason your Church stood still in her course and exclaimed:* Glory to your power, O Lord.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

You went up on the Cross, to the Passion of your pure flesh worn of your own will, thus healing my passions. Therefore we cry to you: Glory to your power, O Lord.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

O Lord, death tasted of your life-giving, sinless flesh and deservedly was slain. But we cry to you: Glory to your power, O Lord.

    Glory… Now…

You bore a child, O Virgin, without a man, and after the birth you were discerned as still a virgin; therefore in faith unwavering we cry in never silent voices: Hail to you, our Lady.

    Ode 5

Irmos: Lord, my light, you have come into the world;* O holy light, turn from the darkness of ignorance all who sing to you in faith.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

In compassion, O Lord, you came down to the earth; hanging upon the tree you raised up the fallen nature of man.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

O Christ, you bore yourself the reproach of my sins; you loosed the pangs of death, Compassionate, in your holy resurrection.

    Glory… Now…

We thrust you forward as an unbreakable shield in face of our enemies; we have gained you, Bride of God, as anchor and hope of our salvation.

    Ode 6

Irmos: I will sacrifice to you, O Lord, with the voice of praise:* so cries your Church to you,* purified from demons’ gore* through the blood which flows in pity from your side.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

Girded with power you went up on the cross and came to grips with the tyrant and as God you dashed him down from the heights and raised up Adam with your invincible hand.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

You are risen, O Christ, from the tomb in dazzling beauty of lightning flash, scattering to the winds by your power divine every one of your enemies. As God you have filled all things with gladness.

    Glory… Now…

O wonder of all wonders, newest and strangest, that a virgin, knowing no man, conceived in the womb him who holds the whole universe in his hands and suffered no straitening.

    Kontakion

My Saviour and deliverer, as God, has raised those born of the earth from the bonds of the grave, he has

    Oikos

To-day Christ, the giver of life, has risen from the dead, come after three days from the tomb; by his might he has smashed the doors of death, put Hell to death and crushed death’s sting and Adam with Eve set free. Let all of us born of the earth sing to him, in thankfulness fervently cry out his praise. For he, the lone strong One, on the third day as God and as Lord has risen.

    Ode 7

Irmos: In a Persian furnace three children of Abraham were set on fire* but more than in the flames they blazed in loving desire to God, and cried:* Blessed are you, O Lord,* in the temple of your glory.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

Washed in Christ’s divine blood, mankind has been called to incorruption and sings in thanksgiving: Blessed are you, O Lord, in the temple of your glory.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

Your tomb, O Christ, declares itself life-bearing, fairer far than Paradise, more radiant than any kingly hall, fount of our resurrection.

    Glory… Now…

Hail, tabernacle of the Most High, hallowed and sacred. Joy is given through you, O Mother of God, to those who cry to you: Blessed are you amongst women, All-holy Lady.

    Ode 8

Irmos: Daniel, with hands outspread in the den,* stopped the gaping jaws of the lions;* the three children, lovers of God,* clothed in the virtue of godliness,* quenched the power of the fire and sang aloud:* Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

With hands outspread on the cross, O Lord, you gathered together the nations and showed them to be one Church praising you, with those on earth and those in heaven in harmony singing: Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord.

Glory to your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

As lightning flashing, in the unapproachable light of the resurrection, the white-robed angel appeared to the women and cried: Why do you seek the living in the tomb as dead? Christ is risen indeed and we cry to him: All you his works, sing praises to the Lord.

    Glory… Now…

You alone, among all the families of the earth, are revealed as Mother of God; wholly without stain, unharmed by the fire of the unapproachable light, you became the dwelling-place of the Godhead. We all bless you, therefore, Mary, God’s bride.

    Magnificat

    Ode 9

Irmos: Let everyone on earth dance for joy in spirit.* Let the heavenly ranks celebrate in honour of the sacred feast.* O Mother of God, let them cry:* Rejoice, ever-blessed Theotokos and ever-virgin.

Venerable father Anthony, pray to God for us!

In all things you strove to imitate the life of the great Anthony, who in ancient times was glorified. He dwelt alone in the desert, while you, father, shut yourself up in a cave, and for many long years did not leave it.

Venerable father Anthony, pray to God for us!

By the same way that led to the holy mountain, you, O father Anthony, arrived in the city of Kyiv, where you found it fitting to build a church in honour of our Lady, the Mother of God. There, together with blessed Theodosius, you built that most holy church for the glory of the Mother of God. Therefore, we all, together with him, extol you.

    Glory… Now…

With hands raised to God, you performed glorious miracles, O father Anthony; for through your prayers you drew down from heaven fire to purify the site for the Church of the most pure One, whom we extol together with you.

    Small Litany

    Holy is the Lord

    Hymn of Light (Gospel 5)

Christ our Way and our Life,* after His resurrection from the dead,* accompanied Luke and Cleopas,* who had recognized Him at Emmaus in the breaking of the bread.* Their hearts and souls were inflamed as He spoke to them on the way,* explaining to them all the Scriptures that pertained to Him.* Let us, therefore, shout with them, saying:* Truly, the Lord is risen and has appeared to Peter.

    Glory…

You mortified the sweet passions of life, O Anthony; and having recognized that glory is fleeting, you quickly turned away from it, preferring to walk the narrow path which leads to the broad expanse of paradise. Wherefore, pray, O Anthony, that those who honour you be saved. (2)

    Now…

I praise Your love without limit, O my Creator;* for You emptied Yourself to put on our broken nature to save us.* O all-compassionate Lord, even though You are God,* You consented for my sake to be born into our human condition* and to descend into Hades to save us,* through the intercession of Your most pure Mother.

    Praises

Stichera of the Praises, Tone 4

You suffered death on the cross,* and You arose from the dead.* We glorify your holy Resurrection, O almighty Lord.

By your cross You delivered us from the ancient curse, O Christ;* by your death You have utterly destroyed the Devil* who tyrannized the human race;* by your Resurrection You have filled the whole world with joy.* Therefore, we cry out to You:* O Lord who rose from the dead, glory to You!

By your cross lead us to your truth, O Christ our Saviour;* deliver us from the snares of the Enemy.* You are risen from the dead;* now raise us up from our fall into sin.* Stretch forth your hand to us, O Lord,* through the prayers of your saints.

O only Son and Word of God,* You were not separated from the bosom of the Father* when You came to earth out of love for us* and became a man without undergoing change.* In the flesh You suffered death on the cross* even though You are beyond all suffering in your divinity.* You rose from the dead, granting immortality to the human race,* for You alone, O Lord, are almighty.

    In Tone 2

Desiring to behold the ineffable joy of the saints* and the gladness of the righteous who have pleased God,* you disdained every joy in the world,* and spent your days in fasting and tears,* until you mortified the passions of the body.* Wherefore, you have been vouchsafed the joy of the righteous.* Pray with them, that our souls be saved. (2)

Accept today hymns of laudation in your memory, O Anthony,* and with your supplications go before God.* Deliver us from having to stand on His left hand,* and pray that we may receive the portion of the elect,* that as is meet we may all bless you as a fervent advocate.

Like a star you shone forth in a dark place, O all-wise and venerable one,* and put the dark faces of the demons to shame;* wherefore, having ascended to the heavens,* you stand with boldness before the throne of Christ,* where you remember those who celebrate your memory, O venerable one,* that we may find mercy on the day of judgment.

    In Tone 8, Glory…

Having forsaken your homeland, O venerable father Anthony,* and accepted voluntary wandering for the sake of the Lord,* for Christ’s sake you bore the labours of a long journey,* hunger and thirst, burning heat and cold;* wherefore, you hear: “O good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord!”* Pray, O father, that we also may hear His voice,* that we may ever bless your memory with love.

    In Tone 2, Now…

You are truly most blessed, O virgin Mother of God.* Through the One who was incarnate of you,* Hades was chained, Adam revived, the curse wiped out,* Eve set free, Death put to death,* and we ourselves were brought back to life.* That is why we cry out in praise;* Blessed are You, O Christ our God,* who finds in this your good pleasure. Glory to You!
