The Transfer of the Relics of the Great-Martyr Ignatius the God-bearer (of Antioch).

    VESPERS

    Kathisma Reading

There is no psalm reading on Sunday night.

    At Psalm 140

    Tone 4

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

You were the last successor of John the Theologian* and you followed in his steps!* You rose from the east, but appeared in the west,* illumining all with the lighting flashes of godly preaching.* There you departed from the world, most wise one,* shining out to God, crowned with the splendour of grace!

Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Most wise bearer of God,* your relics were given to your city in a holy way.* They were hallowed in splendour by your suffering,* illumining us with grace by their return.* They have become the cause of our solemn feast,* filling with gladness inspired by God* and delighting with sweet fragrance* those who honour you with devotion!

Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

Before, you shone from the east upon the lands of the west* more brightly than the morning star.* Now, in the return of your divine relics,* you have spread beams of light upon the earth from the evening sky.* You entreat Christ to deliver from corruption and misfortune* those who celebrate your most honoured memory with faith!

    Tone 8, Glory…

God-bearing Ignatius,* you soared on high to Christ Whom you desired.* You have received the reward of the holy ministry of Christ's Gospel * which you fulfilled in the shedding of your blood.* Therefore, as the wheat of the immortal Husbandman,* you were ground by the teeth of wild beasts* and were revealed to be sweet bread for Him.* Pray for us, blessed athlete!

    Now…

Rejoice, O Death to Demons!* Rejoice, O Daughter of Adam, most flourishing and unwilting Flower!* Rejoice, O Glory of your servants!* Rejoice, Most Immaculate, and Forgiveness of wicked ones!* Rejoice, O Gift of Salvation granted to the world by God!* Rejoice, O Precious One of those who call upon you!* Rejoice, O Mother, Glory for those who extol you!

    Aposticha

    Tone 2

Like the prodigal, I have sinned against You, O Saviour.* Receive me, O Father, for I am repentant;* and have mercy on me, O God.

I have lifted up my eyes to You enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God until He has mercy on us.

I cry out to You, O Christ my Saviour,* with the voice of the publican.* Be merciful to me as You were to him,* and have mercy on me, O God.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we have been filled with shame; our soul is all too full of the mockery of the rich, of the contempt of the proud.

Since you did not love earthly delights, O Martyrs,* you were worthy of the blessings of heaven,* and now you abide with the angels.* O Lord, through their prayers, have mercy on us and save us.

    Tone 1, Glory…

Blessed Ignatius, your soul was strong and firm as a stone.* You cried out with great longing to Him who loves you:* it is not a material fire burning within me,* but the voice of the living water which dwells within my heart.* It continually cries: come to the Father!* Therefore in your desire to be with Christ* and being inflamed with the Holy Spirit,* you urged the beasts speedily to take you from this world* and send you to Christ whom you desired.* Pray to Him that He may save our souls!

    Now…

O Joy of the heavenly ranks,* O Mighty Help of all on earth,* O most pure Virgin, save us who hasten to you,* since, after God, we place our hope in you, O Mother of God.

    Troparion

    Tone 4

Having shared the way of life of the apostles,* and having become a successor to their thrones,* labouring you found the divinely inspired way to contemplation.* Therefore, forthrightly ministering the word of truth,* you shed your blood for the faith, O hieromartyr, Ignatius.* Intercede with Christ our God for the salvation of our souls.

    Glory… Now…

To the One who was reared in the Temple,* close to the Holy of Holies,* and who was full of faith, wisdom, and perfect virginity,* Gabriel, the captain and leader,* offered esteem and greetings from heaven when he said:* Rejoice, O blessed One! Rejoice, O glorified One!* The Lord is with you.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen.

Kontakion, Tone 4: Having piously lived among the hierarchs,* and having trod the path of suffering,* you extinguished the sacrifices to idols* and were a defender for your flock, O godly one.* Therefore, venerating you, we sincerely cry to you:* “Rescue us from dangers by your prayers, O our father, Ignatius.
