Our Holy Father Andrew the Jerusalemite, Archbishop of Crete; Venerable Martha, Mother of the Holy Simeon of the Mountain of Wonders.

    VESPERS ON WEDNESDAY EVENING

    At Psalm 140

    Tone 1

If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

Hating the earthly authority of the body, with pure temperament and a simple heart* you cleaved to the Lord, O wise father,* and were shown to be a divinely inspired instrument of the Comforter,* playing the psalmody of salvation for us.

I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

Finding the Mother of the Lord to be the subject of great laudation, O Andrew,* you also hymned with mellifluous discourses* the sacred apostles and the company of the blessed martyrs.* With them be mindful of us who honour you.

From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

We know you to be a pillar of orthodoxy, a model of chastity,* an example of meekness, and a godly hymnographer* illumining the Church of Christ, O father Andrew, initiate of sacred mysteries.* Wherefore, we celebrate your festival.

    Tone 4

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Through fasting and tears you set yourself apart* for painful ascetic endeavour and courageous battle* against the hordes of the enemy who have crippled human nature,* sparing not your flesh for the sake of God's love.* Wherefore, you undertook godly struggles, casting down the mind of the adversary,* O honoured and all-glorious Martha.

Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

You spurned transitory things, and avoided the love of what is corruptible,* and desired the heavenly portion which is everlasting,* meet for the righteous and incorrupt, and never-ending life, O pure one.* Wherefore, celebrating your radiant and splendid memory with faith, O glorious Martha,* we honour you with divine hymns.

    Tone 4, Glory…

Relieving ailments with the grace of the Spirit, you drive away evil spirits,* heal sufferings and enlighten the faithful with the radiance of your miracles, O most glorious Martha.* Wherefore, we hymn your splendid, radiant, and right wondrous memory today* with unceasing hymnody.

    Now…

O all-pure one, who has contained the infinite God in your womb* who, in His love for mankind, has become a man,* and has received our substance from you, deifying it:* disdain me not who am now sorrowing,* but quickly take pity and free me from diverse enemies* and the malice of the evil one.

    Prokeimenon, Tone 5

O Lord, save me by Your name,* and in Your power be a judge for me.

verse: O God, hear my prayer; listen to the words of my mouth.

    Aposticha

    Tone 5

As eyewitnesses to the mysteries of the Saviour, О disciples,* you preached the Invisible One who has no beginning, saying:* In the beginning was the Word.* You were not created before the angels, nor were you taught of men,* but by the wisdom of the Most High.* Wherefore, as you have boldness, pray on behalf of our souls.

I have lifted up my eyes to You enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God until He has mercy on us.

Together let us praise the apostles of the Lord with hymns,* for, having arrayed themselves in the armour of the Cross,* they abolished the delusion of the demons* and were revealed to be crowned victors.* By the supplications of them and all the saints, О God, have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we have been filled with shame; our soul is all too full of the mockery of the rich, of the contempt of the proud.

Your souls filled with insatiable love, О holy martyrs,*you did not deny Christ;* and enduring the diverse wounds of sufferings,* you cast down the audacity of the tormentors;* and having preserved the Faith intact and unharmed,* you were translated to the heavens.* Wherefore, as you have boldness before Him, ask that He grant us great mercy.

    Tone 8, Glory…

We honour you, O Andrew our father, as the instructor of a multitude of monks;* for through you have we truly come to know how to walk your path aright.* Blessed are you who, labouring for Christ,* denounced the power of the enemy, O converser with the angels,* companion of the venerable and the righteous.* Pray with them to the Lord, that our souls find mercy.

    Now…

I flee to thy protection, O holy Virgin Theotokos,* for I know that through you I shall obtain salvation;* for you areable to help me, O pure one.

    Troparia

    Tone 4

The truth of your deeds made you for your flock a rule of faith* and an image of meekness,* a teacher of continence.* And so you gained the heights through humility,* riches through poverty,* father and bishop, Andrew.* Intercede with Christ, our God,* for the salvation of our souls.

    Tone 8

The divine image was faithfully preserved in you, O mother,* for taking up the Cross you followed Christ.* By your deeds you have taught us to see beyond flesh which passes* and care for the soul, a thing immortal.* And so, O venerable woman, Martha,* your spirit rejoices with the angels.
