VESPERS ON THURSDAY EVENING

The appointed psalms are chanted.
At Psalm 140
Tone 4
If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.
O blessed Philip, who as one full of wisdom and divine grace* was numbered among the seven deacons,* you were chosen with Stephen to minister to the needs of the saints.* Wherefore, beholding him slain, you hastened to Samaria at the command of God, O glorious one,* preaching the word of God and enlightening them that before were in darkness, O most wise one,* whom you made children of the day through the Spirit of God.
I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.
Beholding the divine signs wrought by Your hand:* the recovery of sight by the blind, the healing of the paralyzed,* the expulsion of unclean spirits where they lived,* the people marvelled, O Philip, and came to you for spiritual cleansing,* brought suddenly from unbelief to faith.* Wherefore, when they heard of this, the divine choir of the apostles were gladdened,* for a multitude of Samaritans was led to God.
From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.
Being yourself a chariot of the Word, O divinely eloquent one,* beholding the right wondrous eunuch of Candace riding upon a chariot,* questioning and in doubt, you overtook him* and revealed to him the discourse and manifestation of things desired, O blessed one;* and, believing, he asked of you divine cleansing.* And when he had received it, the Creator of all made him a divine preacher,* the first among the martyrs of all Ethiopia.
Tone 6
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.
Radiantly did you shine forth, O glorious Theophanes,* in the firmament of faith like a star most bright,* dispelling all the darkness of the heretics with the rays of your light* and illumining with your divine teaching them that turn to you with faith and love.* Wherefore, with love do we celebrate your radiant feast:* Pray with boldness in behalf of our souls.
Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.
Having armed your soul with labours of fasting,* you put an end to the capers of the flesh, O most sacred father,* and made your mind a dwelling of the divine Trinity, O glorious one.* You were raised up where the armies of the martyrs,* the assemblies of hierarchs and ineffable beauty are,* and with them you now rejoice, standing in glory before Christ,* praying with boldness in behalf of our souls.
Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.
With the divine streams of your tears, O hierarch,* you drowned the whole encampment of the demons as though it were helpless;* and by your continual beseeching of God and your mighty ascents* you cast down to the earth prideful exaltation and ascended to the splendid mansion of heaven,* where you abide with the angels, standing before Christ,* praying with all the company of the blessed ones.
Tone 6, Glory… Now…
The unblemished ewe-lamb, the immaculate Mistress,* as she beheld of old her Lamb upon the Tree of the Cross,* cried out maternally and exclaimed in amazement:* O Child most sweet, what is this new and most glorious sight?* How have the thankless assembly of the Judeans given You over to the court of Pilate?* How is the Life of all condemned to death?* I hymn Your ineffable condescension, O Word!
Prokeimenon, Tone 6
My help is from the Lord,* Who made heaven and earth.
verse: I lifted up my eyes to the mountains, from where my help shall come.
Aposticha
Tone 3
I bow down, О Christ, before Your precious Cross:* the guardian of the world, the salvation of us sinners,* the great purification and boast of the whole world.
I have lifted up my eyes to You enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God until He has mercy on us.
Lifting up his arms in the form of the Cross on the mountain, Moses vanquished Amalek;* and You, О Saviour, stretched out upon the precious Cross, embraced me,* saving me from slavery to the enemy,* and gave it to me as the sign of life,* enabling me to evade the arrows of my adversaries.* Wherefore, О Word, I bow down before Your precious Cross.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we have been filled with shame; our soul is all too full of the mockery of the rich, of the contempt of the proud.
Great is the power of Your Cross!* For it was planted in one place, yet works throughout the world;* and it made apostles of fishermen and martyrs of the heathen,* that they might pray on behalf of our souls.
Tone 3, Glory… Now…
The all-immaculate one, beholding You lifted up upon the Tree,* cried out, weeping maternally: “O my supremely good Christ, my most beloved Son!* How have the iniquitous assembly lifted You up upon the Cross?”
Troparia
Tone 3
Holy Apostle, Philip, intercede with the merciful God* to grant our souls forgiveness of sins.
Tone 8, Glory…
Instructor in orthodoxy, teacher of piety and purity, beacon to the whole world,* divinely inspired adornment of hierarchs, O Theophanes most wise,* You have enlightened all by your teachings.* Entreat Christ God that our souls be saved, O harp of the Spirit.
Now…
When the Mother beheld upon the cross* the Lamb, the Shepherd, and the Saviour of the world,* she exclaimed tearfully:* The world rejoices at the sight of its redemption,* but my heart is afire as I see Your pain on the cross,* which You accept for the sake of all, O my Son and my God!
