Our Venerable Father Euthymius the Younger; The Holy Venerable-Martyr Lucian, Priest of Great Antioch.

    VESPERS ON MONDAY EVENING

    Kathisma Reading

    The appointed psalms are chanted.

    At Psalm 140

    Tone 4

If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

You traversed the narrow path with untroubled spirit,* sailing to those things which lead to life;* for you were the boast of fasters, O Euthymius,* having steadfastly set at naught the pursuit of the demons.* Wherefore, you have been counted worthy to be an heir to the heavenly kingdom,* and you delight in never-ending beauty.

I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

Your most radiant life astonished the angels* and manifestly affrighted the savage demons;* you have splendidly adorned the assemblies of the faithful,* ever commanding them to go to the heavenly dwelling place of Christ.* Entreat Him that they that celebrate your most honoured memory with faith* be delivered from corruption and misfortunes.

From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

Hymnody and praise did you bring to Christ every day, O father, while dwelling in the desert;* and offering up your soul and mind to the one God,* like the great Moses you ascended to the impassable heights of sanctity.* Wherefore, having vanquished the invisible foe,* you became a pure habitation and an instrument of the divine Spirit.

    Tone 4

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

You made the faithful steadfast, enriching them with faith* and the discourse of knowledge of God,* that they might boldly endure the rage of the tyrant* for the sake of the life which is to come and incorruptible.* Wherefore, we call you blessed, O right glorious Lucian,* and we celebrate your divine solemnity today.

Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Lengthy imprisonment and a most violent death you endured, O venerable one,* bound with bonds, lacerated with sharp-edged shards, O blessed one,* and weakened by cruel starvation and by long thirst.* Wherefore, you have manifestly received heavenly food* and been made an invincible martyr, O valiant athlete.

Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

The bosom of the sea, receiving you, O glorious one,* gave you over to the dry land after thirty days,* like Jonah of old, through the agency of wild beasts, for divinely honourable interment, a divine wellspring of healings,* princely election of martyrs, establishment of the Church, intercession for our souls,* God-bearer most rich.

    Tone 6, Glory…

O venerable father, word of your corrections has gone forth into all the earth;* wherefore, you have found the reward of your labours in the heavens,*have destroyed the legions of the demons, and attained to the ranks of the angels,* whose life you blamelessly emulated.* Possessed of boldness before Christ God, ask peace for our souls.

    Now…

О most holy Virgin, show forth upon me, the wretched one,* the depths of your love for mankind,* the abyss of your tender compassion, and the countless compassions of thy goodness.* Mow down the stubble of sin, granting me chastity,* and preserve my body and soul undefiled,* О you who have given birth to the Saviour.

    Prokeimenon, Tone 4

The Lord hears me* when I cry out to Him.

verse: Whenever I called, the God of my justice heard me.

    Aposticha

    Tone 4

I wish to wash away the record of my sins with tears, O Lord,* and please You the rest of my life through repentance;* but the enemy deceives me and fights against my soul.* Save me, O Lord, before the end and I utterly perish.

I have lifted up my eyes to You enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God until He has mercy on us.

Who, among the tempest-tossed, having taking refuge in Your harbour,* will not be saved O Lord?* Or who, that ails and falling down in Your infirmary, will not be healed?* O Maker of all that is, and Physician of the ailing,* save me, O Lord, before the end and I utterly perish

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we have been filled with shame; our soul is all too full of the mockery of the rich, of the contempt of the proud.

О Lover of mankind,* as One who has accepted the patience of the holy martyrs,* by their prayers, grant us great mercy.

    Tone 5, Glory…

O venerable father, you gave no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids,* until you freed your soul and body of the passions* and had prepared yourself as a habitation of the Spirit;* for Christ, coming with the Father, made His dwelling within you,* and you became a favourite of the consubstantial Trinity.* O great preacher Euthymius, pray in behalf of our souls.

    Now…

Assuage the sufferings of my much-sighing soul,* O you that wipe every tear from the face of the earth;* for you banish the sufferings of mankind,* and dispel the sorrows of the sinful.* For in you do we all have our hope and confirmation,* O most holy Virgin Mother.

    Troparia

    Tone 8

In you, O holy father Euthymius,* the faithful image of God shone forth,* for you carried your cross and followed Christ.* You taught by your deeds how to spurn the body, for it passes away;* and how to value the soul, for it is immortal.* Therefore, your soul is forever in happiness with the angels.

    Tone 4, Glory…

You kept yourself chaste by your fasting,* and you received an untarnishing crown by your martyrdom.* O martyred priest, Lucian, the pride of Antioch,* beg Christ to save us who keep your holy memory.

    Now…

With hymns of praise let us, the faithful, exalt the Mother of God,* the solid foundation of our faith* and the precious gift to our souls:* Rejoice, O woman who contained in your womb the Rock of life!* Rejoice, O hope of the world and helper of those who are in trouble!* Rejoice, O bride and Virgin forever!
