VESPERS ON TUESDAY EVENING
Kathisma Reading
The appointed psalms are chanted.
At Psalm 140
Tone 4
If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.
Come, O divinely wise,* and in sacred manner let us honour the memory of the brother of God;* for, taking up the yoke of Christ with zeal,* he showed himself to be a preacher of the goodness of His Gospel and kingdom,* and persuades us of His ineffable providence.* Wherefore, through him, O Almighty One, grant us cleansing.
I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.
From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.
The proclamation of your words has catechized all the ends of the world;* thereby are we enlightened for every manner of divine virtue* and are guided by faith to acknowledge the Holy Trinity.* Wherefore, we beseech you, as a hierarch:* Pray to Jesus, who loves mankind, that He save our souls.
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.
Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.
Perceiving your manner of life from afar, O James,* Christ, who loves mankind, the All-wise One who sees all things,* receiving you, ordains you as an instructor of the sacred mysteries for the people of Jerusalem* and a priest to perform the ineffable sacred mysteries.* Beseech Him now that our souls be saved.
Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.
Tone 6, Glory…
With the blood of martyrdom you adorned your priesthood, O hieromartyr and apostle;* for standing forth on the pinnacle of the temple,* you proclaimed God the Word to be the Creator of all that exists.* Wherefore, cast down by the Jews, you were vouchsafed the mansions of heaven, O James, brother of God,* entreat Christ God that our souls be saved.
Now…
Your pure Virgin Mother,* beholding the most iniquitous people* who unjustly nailed You to the Tree,* was wounded within, as Symeon foretold.
Prokeimenon, Tone 1
Your mercy, O Lord, shall follow me* all the days of my life.
verse: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. In green pastures He gives me repose.
Aposticha
Tone 1
All of us, the multitudes of the pious, celebrating the sacred feast now with joy,* exclaim with loud voices, faithfully praising the brother of God, the disciple of the Lord,* in psalms and hymnody;* for he ever prays that we be saved.
Their proclamation has gone out into all the earth and their words to the ends of the universe!
You were shown to be the Word’s brother in the flesh by His own desire, O wise one,* His disciple and an eye-witness to divine mysteries,* having fled with Him to Egypt, with Joseph and the Mother of Jesus.* With them pray that we be saved.
The heavens are telling the glory of God and the firmament proclaims His handiwork!
The choir of the apostles chose you to be the first bishop in holy Sion for Christ our Benefactor,* in that you are His kinsman and brother according to the flesh, His companion* and the heir to His footsteps, O James.
Tone 8, Glory…
You were the brother and successor of Christ, the Chief Shepherd,* and He puts you forward among the apostles.* You loved Him for whom you died, and were not daunted by torture, O glorious James.* Entreat Him unceasingly that He save our souls.
Now…
O Mistress, accept the supplications of your servants,* and deliver us from all want and grief.
Troparion
Tone 2
O holy James, as a disciple of the Lord, you received the gospel;* as a martyr, you displayed an unyielding will.* As a brother of the Lord, you have special power with Him;* as a pontiff, you have the right of intercession.* Intercede, therefore, with Christ our God that He may save our souls.
Glory… Now…
O Virgin and all-glorious Mother of God,* we sing to you a hymn of praise,* for Hades has been destroyed by your Son’s cross;* Death has been put to death,* and we, the dead, have been made to rise and become worthy of life.* We have obtained paradise, the original bliss.* Therefore, we glorify you by giving thanks to Christ our God,* for He alone is almighty and all-merciful.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen.
